The Bloomsbury Hotel
"The Writer's Retreat".
Working with Nomadic Films, we were asked to create a film to promote the majestic Bloomsbury Hotel in London.
Always keen to think outside of the box, we explored ways that we could create this film without it just feeling like an obvious piece of self-promotion.
Located on a quiet street in the heart of Bloomsbury – an area of London known for its literary connections, we spoke to the owners and hotel staff and were excited to learn that the hotel was regally visited by the great 20th Century writer Virginia Woolf.
Armed with this interesting piece of history, and in Virginia's honour, we created our protagonist 'Florence' – a modern day writer, who also used the Bloomsbury hotel as somewhere to escape to so that she too could work on her next novel.
By following in the footsteps of Virginia, we were able to then use 'Florence' to act as our 'red-thread' throughout the film and create an interesting way of showcasing the various parts of this glorious hotel.
Keen to avoid our film being a fictional piece of work in itself, we made the decision to also feature members of the actual staff that worked there – and it was through them that we would also provide the narration of the story.
Inspired by the Wes Anderson film "The Great Budapest Hotel", we used a similar style of direction and cinematography to really bring the Bloomsbury Hotel's personality to life.
